Drug/Alcohol Abuse Awareness Experience
Elixir creates a safe space for students to explore the reality of drug and alcohol abuse. The half day experience is designed for students to develop an empowering vision while building their own awareness of how drugs and alcohol can impact their ability to fulfil their full potential. Each process is facilitated by a recovered addict/alcoholic who shares their recovery journey while using coaching and mentoring skills to relate the issues to their own experience of abuse. Nature is used as a back drop to explore key life principles and how drugs and alcohol are a toxic choice to ones ambitions and opportunities for growth. The experience can be offered as part of a school tour, life skills curriculum or facilitated one on one with students who may be struggling with abuse.
The Elixir Experience has the following objectives:
- To offer students a fun, adventurous and engaging life skills development experience.
- Create an effective space for students to reflect on their lives so that they can make more informed choices regarding their future.
- Connect individuals to a unique sense of purpose that is based on their individuality. A meaningful purpose is one of the most fundamental emotional needs in the developed world. Connecting students to their own unique purpose is very effective in developing self esteem and reducing the need for drugs/alcohol.
- Explore the concept of personal fulfilment. Students are not often aware of the emotional needs that drive their behaviour. Greater awareness around these emotional dynamics foster the adoption of healthy vehicles to meet these needs rather than resorting to drugs, alcohol or any harmful life practice
- Connect students to powerful nature based symbols that act as experiential metaphors for life experience and personal growth.
- Promote key life principles through nature including:
- Balance
- Authenticity
- Resilience
- Adaptation
- Efficiency
- Synergy
Key Benefits of the Methodology
Opportunities to build relationships with sober mentors and role models who can give students a personal insight into the dangers of abuse and the opportunities of avoidance/sobriety.
Nature has been proven to be a powerful vehicle for getting students into a peak state of awareness and intuitive ability; while the wilderness provides a perfect space for students to explore, express themselves and to process any emotions related to their life experience or addictive behaviour.
Improved level of self awareness through coaching, facilitated group dialogue and the sharing of experience related to drug and alcohol abuse.
Nature brings alive the concept of being authentic or natural and is a powerful principle which inspires students to cultivate a healthy sense of self esteem.
Being in nature connects the participant to the reality that everything in a system has a purpose and every action has an impact. Connecting students to that purpose empowers them to make a bigger contribution while raising their awareness that even the slightest negative change impacts the whole system. This supports students to internalise the consequences of drugs/alcohol to friends, family and society.
Nature is brought alive in a completely new way providing a platform for students to make the wilderness a consistent part of their development.
